My name is Mark Schipper. I am a professional writer and aspiring filmmaker.

At the moment I am working on a college football book that combines our contemporary cultural moment with American history, personal memoir, and an odyssey across the country. The fascinating, monstrous, and inspirational story of the United States is inseparable from that of college football's, a game whose sound and fury I've been an exuberant camp follower and acolyte of—almost as though it were a kind of religion—since I was a small child just old enough to pick up the mystic chords of memory sounding from campuses across the country each autumn.

For Arc-Digital: Did you know that Michael Jordan was a Nietzschean Superman? I wrote this piece for Arc-Digital arguing the great Jordan's career was presaged in the 19th century philosophies of the German intellectual Friedrich Nietzsche.

The biggest beating in college football history occurred in October of 1916, when John Heisman's Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets clobbered the Cumberland College Bulldogs 222-0. But there is more to that story than many know and this is the place to get the dope. ​

Wrong Reel: One of my favorite movie podcasts is called Wrong Reel, hosted by New Yorker James Hancock, a serious movie aficionado. I went on this podcast & had a great time as a guest talking about the director Peter Yates and some of his best movies.

The Hayden Fry Classic from Denton, Texas: ​Coach Fry was the head man at SMU, North Texas, and finally, the University of Iowa, where he became a national figure and legend of the game. Fry's second school, North Texas, is honoring him with a throwback Flying Worm uniform in their game against SMU.
